Week 3 - From Usenet to Twitter: The (Not So) New Media
Over the years, Google has offered a wide variety of services to establish itself as one of the largest companies in the world. To make these services free, Google keeps track of your data and uses it for personalized ads. As the debate about Google's online privacy increases, people are looking for a new alternative search engine. Well, DuckDuckGo might be your new choice of search engine.
DuckDuckGo is a search engine built-in 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg. It is the most visited 8th search engine after the most famous ones like Google, Bing, Yahoo. It defines itself as "the search engine which does not collect your data". Nearly all the search engines collect your data and use it for showing personalized advertisements. However, DuckDuckGo does not track you and your data. Since the website was created, its popularity of it increased dramatically - from nearly 80.000 daily visits to 24 million visits. DuckDuckGo's privacy policy is clearly written, and they collect only a small amount of information needed for the operation of the web engine.
DuckDuckGo is an open-source application. DuckDuckGo can be accessed by extensions of Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. This extension forces websites to use HTTPS over HTTP and block hidden trackers. DuckDuckGo's Android and iOS applications are based on features found in browser extensions. The key difference between Google and DuckDuckGo is that DuckDuckGo does not store IP addresses. Even though there are many clear benefits of this search engine, many people still refuse to use it for some reason.
