Week 13 - A Practical Example: the Story of Linux (Kali vs Parrot OS)

Linux is the most well-known and widely used open-source operating system. Unlike other operating systems, Linux has an open-source structure. This means that the person using the operating system can be aware of almost everything that goes on in the background of the computer, and can organize and develop the operating system in his own way.

Whether you know Linux or not, you've probably used Linux before, albeit unintentionally. Almost a third of websites are run by servers built by Linux. Apart from that, the Linux operating system is generally used by individuals who are familiar with software and many large companies.

The reason companies choose Linux when setting up their servers is because it is much more secure than other operating systems. In addition, Linux is a more flexible and comfortable operating system compared to other operating systems. There is also an incredibly large community working to improve Linux. Companies can really get tremendous help from this community whenever they want. There are also companies that offer commercial support for the Linux operating system.

In the following paragraphs, I will write about the differences between Kali Linux and Parrot OS.

Kali Linux is a Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at advanced Penetration Testing and Security Auditing. Kali includes more than 600 preloaded tools for various information security tasks such as Penetration Testing, Security investigation, Computer Forensics, Web Application Testing, and Reverse Engineering. Kali Linux is developed and maintained by Offensive Security, a leading information security training company.

Parrot Linux (Parrot Security, parrot OS, Parrot GNU/Linux) is a free and open-source GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian Testing designed for security professionals, developers, and privacy-conscious individuals. When I say Debian-based, I mean that the code repositories conform to Debian's development standards. It includes a full portable arsenal for IT security and digital forensics, but also everything you need to develop your own programs or protect your privacy while surfing the web. The operating system comes pre-installed with the MATE desktop environment and is available in a variety of ways to suit your needs.

Both operating systems serve the same purpose i.e. cybersecurity and penetration testing. In such cases, most of the factors are reduced to a matter of personal taste rather than an objective comparison. Now, before I start comparing ParrotOS and Kali Linux, let me list the similarities between the two operating systems.

Speaking of performance, Kali lags a bit, and it becomes a nightmare when you run it on a low-end system, sometimes a brute force attack in the background, and do something else. However, the Parrot is very light and does not delay much, because it also works on low spec systems.

To conclude, I hope you have a clear idea about Parrot OS and Kali Linux. I have discussed in detail almost everything about both operating systems. However, choosing an OS is up to your taste and choice, if you have a low spec system I would highly recommend going with Parrot OS. Go with whatever you want other than that.
